EVERGREENS
A great plant for screening a tight area in the sun, the giant arborvitae is deer resistant and grows rapidly to a good height and width.
The Leland Cypress is a fast growing screen tree, requiring about 10’ of space. Heavy snow and wind is a concern with the Leland Cypress. Wet soil and high winds have been known to cause problems.
Spruce is a wonderful group of plants, from ground covers, to the weeping form, to wonderful spruce screens. Spruce are rigorous plants resisting even the heavy storms of winter. None of our spruce were damaged by even the heaviest of the winter’s storms! Spruce trees have a great range of color and texture to their needles and a variety of structures.

We have all of this family from blue atlas giants to the weeping forms with dinosaur reach, with the exception of Eastern Red Cedar they carry a disease (apple cedar rust) so we do NOT stock this tree.

DECIDUOUS
Fall color, summer shade, and winter sun light are all excellent reasons for buying shade trees. Yellow fall color is the standard, or buy red to mix it up!

Our Cherry Tree selection is great, with weeping cherries a special bargain now! Stewartias look like a camellia tree, flowering apricots are wonderful and bloom in early March. What a way to welcome the Spring! Dogwoods are a disaster this year. We recommend replacing them with Kousas or Rudgers Hybrids to avoid the disease that is plaguing the indigenous dogwood trees.

AZALEAS
Encore Azaleas are beautiful blooming on new growth 2-3 times per year! Azaleas do require a little maintenance. Some protection from the winter is helpful as these plants are somewhat prone to winter damage, and a good long range fertilizer is needed to keep them blooming, but the results speak for themselves beautiful.

Hosta is a wonderful plant that doubles its size every year; the newer varieties expand the family from tiny teacup size to true giants. Fragrant blooms range in color from white to blue and purple red, and foliage of blue gold, variegated and green, with shapes from twist and turn, to round. Unfortunately, deer love these plants, so they should not be used in areas with deer problems.

GREENHOUSE
Very easy to grow, Phalaenopsis is a fool proof long blooming houseplant. Other varieties of Orchid require patience for a shorter blooming period, but a good collection of orchids is a lifelong companion. We have had orchids in bloom every day for the past 37 years.

Bonsai is an art and requires continued attention by you, the artist. Mini-Jade and Serrisa require less attention then most types of bonsai, but all bonsai have to be cared for. We provide starters, dishes, stands, and small to mature finished plants, but when we say finished, it’s only the beginning of the care for these unique plants.

Cactus is where I started over 50 years ago. A Jade in a coffee can lived for years under a kids care. Cactus and Succulents give a young person a fighting chance to grow house plants. Our wide selection gives collectors something new every time, and our outdoor cacti and succulents thrive for decades, and look great in a rock garden.

Flowering tropicals are usually considered outside patio summer flowers, but our Bougainvillea is a tropical bonsai that blooms in November and December! Flowering Tropicals must be brought in before the frost, and require some time as they acclimate to the change. Check out our specials on Jasmine and Citrus!

What a selection! After 50 years wholesaling and watching new varieties we have it all in hanging baskets, market packs, singles and 6” pots. Thursday through Saturday are the best days to see our full selection. We try for a continuous supply, but the truth is it’s impossible to have 100’s of varieties and colors continually in stock. However, no garden center can compete with my effort to provide you with our mammoth selection. I started wholesaling to Safeway, Hechinger’s, Woolworth’s, and more 50 years ago, and kept at least 200 stores stocked. I can take care of your plant needs, at a better price and it is our joy to do so at Craven’s Nursery and Pottery.

We have the usual seasonal mainstays, Shamrocks, flowers for St. Valentine’s day, our special Easter lilies, but Mother’s Day is truly something special around here. One year I sold hundreds of Rhododendrons perfectly blooming for Mother’s Day. The next year the Rhododendrons were blooming a little late so we focused on Azaleas, but every year we sell hundreds and hundreds of hanging baskets, special for Mother’s Day. One of the greatest joys of the day is watching the children, big and small, pick out their prize plant, special for their mom. Father’s Day is a little different. We have roses, and gift certificates. Last year’s sales included pallet loads of stone, and timbers, and a large number of trees for the landscaping project dad always wanted done. Red, White, and Blue are in for the 4th of July. Our petunias are noted for their color, and we have combos ready for your patriotic needs. Halloween pumpkins and gourds, corn and gifts, we have it all! Our Thanksgiving specials include Mums, Cyclamen, and houseplants.
